Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy uses a thin, flexible tube with a miniature video camera at the tip to safely investigate conditions associated with the large intestine (colon) and rectum. These may include concerns such as blood in the stool, abdominal pain, bowel problems, or abnormalities found in an imaging. Colonoscopy is also used for the preventative screening typically prescribed for adults around the age of 50.

Colonoscopy is a key to early detection of serious illnesses like colorectal cancer. The Canadian Task Force on Preventative Health Care estimates that 17,000 cases of colorectal cancer occur each year, resulting in approximately 6,500 deaths annually. The task force recommends screening through colonoscopy as a preventative measure.

Description

At North York Endoscopy Centre, colonoscopies include propofol anesthesia given by a qualified anesthetist working with an experienced endoscopist, making the procedure safe and completely painless. We welcome patients who may have been reluctant to undergo screening due to fear of possible discomfort. You can be assured of comfortable, private surroundings and the most up-to-date technology.

Before the beginning of the colonoscopy, you will receive an intravenous sedative or anesthesia to ensure your comfort and minimize any potential discomfort. While lying in a comfortable position, the colonoscope is gently inserted into the rectum and gradually advanced through the colon. Once fully inserted, the instrument is carefully withdrawn. If polyps are detected, the physician may remove them, or a small tissue sample (biopsy) may be taken from the colon lining for further microscopic examination.

Following your procedure, we will keep you under observation until the effects of the sedative/anesthesia have worn off.
